Well, my first day of my first year in administration started with a late sleep-in. Knowing I wouldn't have a classroom full of students in my charge, I snuggled further down in my blankets and slept every so soundly until my alarm woke me from my slumber at 5:15. A quick shower, drying and styling my long, silky locks, pondering the "just right" outfit for the first day of school, a bite to eat, and I was on my way to school by 6:30. Seeing as I live right out the back door from school, I was settled into my office by 6:35 and was off.
I think it was shortly after noon when it dawned on me that not having a class full of kids was sort of a surreal experience. Maybe it was because I started the day in a library full of MS and HS students. Maybe it was because I had the opportunity to visit most of the elementary classes. Maybe it was because, with the exception of sitting long enough for lunch, I didn't really stop all day. So although there weren't a dozen (or two dozen) little people vying for my attention, there didn't seem to be a shortage of people (big and little alike) that were!
An assembly at the start of the day, an assembly at the end of the day, and so much that I'm not sure I can remember jammed into the middle. That was my different kind of a first day.
That being said, the day flew by. In fact, all of the days since school has started have flown by. I have a very strict rule for myself, "Go home before it is dark." That means I have to be on my way home by 5:30. Sometimes, 5:30 sneaks up on me. It's a good thing my office has a window because without it, I'm not sure I'd see the light of day.
It was a very different first day of school, after spending the last 10-first days as a teacher. But it was a good day. Although I'm fairly sure that no matter how much I try, I can't please everyone, I feel as though there are some really positive changes to which I am looking forward.
The learning curve is steep. There will be many a bumpy (sometimes broken path) on the way there, but it is a journey that is off to an exciting start. Here's hoping I'm feeling the same way at the end of the year.
