Shin splints suck

Well, I've decided to become a runner.  As a result, I have shin splints...only in my left shin though - go figure.  At any rate, I'm running about 1/2 mile now (walking a total of 4)  I made my first full lap around our track (1/5 of a mile) and continue to work hard for my 40 year 5 K race.  I need a flashy name for it-  but I have a little more than 2 years to figure something out.  At any rate the 4 mile daily (or almost daily) walk has been a lot of fun.  Even on days that I feel totally exhausted, but the end of it I feel rejuvinated.  I need to feel rejuvinated.  I've been ready for bed by 8:00 or shortly after most days lately.  Chatted with the endocrinologist.  He suggested it's my body's way of slowing my metabolism down since I'm dieting and burning more calories that I was before. Since my first appointment with him (three-ish weeks ago) I have lost 3 kg.  I think I will put up with the sleepiness and keep on trying.

October continues to be a busy month.  We had progress reports just a few weeks ago, and in a few more weeks we will be getting ready for report cards.  Halloween is also coming up.  I remember as a kid how much fun Halloween was - dressing up and all that jazz.  Why do I hate it so much as an adult?  I used to like giving away candy back home in Canada.  I used to enjoy dressing up in my costume when I taught in Canada, but now it just seems so weird.  I don't know.  Maybe it's because Halloween at home didn't seem to interrupt an entire day of study.  Who knows.  I should try to be less of a grump and enjoy the day.

I'm keeping up with my course work this week.  Sort of a good thing because I also have a paper due on Sunday.  It's a curriculum analysis paper.  It is supposed to be reflective of one of the models we've studied in class. Good thing I chatted with mom last night - I finally have a clue about the models that I've apparently been studying for the past five weeks.  ha ah ha

Oh my goodness - I almost forgot the most exciting news of the week.  I am the proud non-adoptive kitty momma of seven cute little furballs and one momma cat.  Please note the NON-adoptive kitty momma.  There are three multi colored babies, an orange baby, two orange and white babies and a grey baby.  The momma is multicolored.  They have been hanging out in my garden since Mr. Webster upstairs tossed down some chicken to the little hungry buggers on the weekend.  Since then, they come daily for breakfast, supper and a little evening snack.  The little orange guy has made dear friends with Ella.  She rolls around on one side of our patio door while he paws at her and they play "tag".  The little grey guy likes to hang out by the patio door too, especially when he can chase my fingers along the glass.  None of them are tame enough to pet or cuddle (Thank goodness) but they are starting to feel more comfortable when I am outside to feed them.  They are looking quite healthy.  Apparently the barber across the street is also feeding the little gremlins.

Other than that, life continues to tick along.  I am reminded daily why I love it here.  It's the man who works at the 24/7 store who greets me every morning on my way to work with a friendly "Hello"; it's the guard that sits on the corner by our school who says "Ahlan" each day as I walk by (Ahlan means "welcome" in arabic).  It's the random stranger who passes by and welcomes me to his country.  Many beautiful things about living in Syria.  I continue to be glad to be here!
