Yes, it's official. December 12th, 2010 is my first actual snow day. Now, while I was interning, I am pretty sure that there was a snow day, but we still went to school. Today is the first time that school was dismissed early due to SNOW.
Now, in case you've forgotten where I live, I am in Damascus. You know, in Syria. In the last two days we've probably had more precipitation than they've had here in years. Yesterday it rained like crazy. This morning was raining as well, but then by about 9:00 the rain was coming down as snow...big, beautiful flakes. The weather is mild, so as you would expect, the snow/rain became slush. My apartment became a swimming pool (water/snow had pooled on the roof and seeped in through walls and such). Now that the water is taken care of, the power is out and I'm left to eating spaghetti by candle light (hurrah for gas stoves, bah hummbug for poorly lit kitchens and plates of spaghetti falling on laps.
So now I am left to using the last of my battery on my computer to tell you about the snow day. I will post pictures very soon (they're at school, and while I live across the street, I'm officially grumpy at the weather and not wanting to go anywhere (except maybe Knuspers for a muffin and coffee) or maybe i"ll brew my own coffee and Baileys - yes, that is what i will do...unless of course I am out of ground coffee beans and can't make any coffee - then this snow day will definitely suck! Grrr.
Anywho, until I arrived home and found my apartment all flooded, I thought that this snow day was a really cool experience. I will find the joys and concentrate more on them, rather than the little flaws.
It's now December 15th. I am teaching in the elementary science lab because my classroom is an absolute mess. However, my kidlets did a great job yesterday adapting to the room changes and such. They were such little troopers. We were in my classroom for the first half hour, then they went to technoogy. Following technology class, we were moved to the middle school, but only until lunch. Then we were moved to another part of campus, but the heat didn't work, so now we're in the science lab. If all goes according to plan,we'll be able to move back to our classroom after the winter break.
Needless to say, the last few days have me more than ready to come home. Today I'm missing 5 kids - due to weather conditions making travel a challenge as well as illness. The kids who are here are working very well. We try to keep as much structure as we possibly can for these last days. Tomorrow we'll head out caroling throughout the elementary school. That will be our "christmas party". If all goes well, I will get some baking done tonight to reward my little gaffers. Otherwise, they'll have to wait until January.
Well, I will post some of the snow day pictures and be in touch really soon.
Wishing you all a wonderful day. Stay tuned - Christmas letter will be posted shortly.
Love and peace
Tylene
