Dear All,
At 6:00 this morning, while preparing to get ready for work, I had a phone call indicating that there would not be school today due to a power outage. We were still to go to school to help with crowd control as students start arriving as early as 6:30.
Upon arrival at the school, I discovered that middle school and high school was without power, but Elementary school was all lit up! Regardless, we made parent calls to cancel for the day. In addition, parent teacher interviews were scheduled for the evening. I was relieved that we were able to go ahead with our interviews. I didn't want to have to reschedule another night in the future. I have discovered that three hours at night doing interviews is much easier to do when you've had the entire day before off! What a delight.
So it was a "snow" day...but without the snow. I am hoping that the upcoming week goes along smoothly...we have a lot going on in Grade Five. Our students have been working hard on the school assembly. Our assembly is on Wednesday. Students in my class decided to make a show on the food network and are preparing one-minute healthy snacks. Although we had a couple of 2 minute snacks, in the end it was a great opportunity for the students to share some of their favourite snacks...as well as be a little goofy as a cooking show host! We video taped the show and one of my tasks for this weekend is to put the videos into a movie. It will be quite the task, that is for sure!
Other than that life in Kuwait is, well, life in Kuwait. The weather has been really horrible lately...lots of humidity, which in comparison to last year is very different. We were "cold" by this time last year. Now, we're stuck in sticky, hot weather. I can't say that I'm enjoying it all that much. I am hoping for a down pour...perhaps that will help lift the humidity. Sadly, down pours aren't all that common in the desert.
Although I am having a great year with my class, there are many things, beyond my control, that are making it hard to consider staying for another year in Kuwait...perhaps Dubai is my next stop...maybe somewhere in Europe. I am going to start seeing what is available and maybe from there will be able to make some decisions...if only it wasn't so difficult to pick up and go...again!
Anywho, not much sense in stressing over it. I am happy to be where I am, although I am not always enjoying the bureaucracy of my job...trying to find a balance is important.
Well, interviews are now finished (I've made it through about 14 of my 20 students tonight). They are certainly different than in Canada. Parents are supportive and encouraging...not that interviews at home weren't positive...they certainly were!
Until next time, please take care. Much love to all!
Ty

Hi, Ty,
Congrats on having parent-teacher conferences over. Do the students attend? I'm sure you had these 'three way' conferences in PA. They weren't done when I was a classroom teacher but I wish they had been. How kids interact with their parents is revealing and even more interesting when their teacher is part of the conversation. I'm curious about what differences there may be in this dynamic between Canada and Kuwait.
While you are suffering through the humidity, we are into cold and flu season. Do you hear any of the great furor about the H1N1 flu virus? Vaccinations are beginning with health care workers, young children, etc. but not all are convinced it's a good thing to do. G and S have head colds right now but I'm NOT going to get it! A pox on their germs!!
Tomato processing continues - one of the wonderful smells of Autumn.
We have a new feline member of the family. Her name is Myrtle and she's a big affectionate grey tabby. She was a yard cat but since the rain and snow (which has melted) she has achieved indoor status with outdoor privileges. We had to let our beautiful Sophia go earlier this month because she had cancer and kidney failure.
Thinking of you and sending lots of love, Lynn
