Remembrance Day is always a special time for me. It serves as a great reminder of the many blessings in my life. Today I had the opportunity to attend the Remembrance Day service at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery. The grounds are beautifully kept. It is a cemetery to honour the fallen soldiers of World War One and World War Two. I was taken aback by the number of gravestones that were marked with "An unknown soldier of the Great War" To think, that was to be the war to end all wars...
DCS was involved in the service. Three of our students read during the ceremony. The Poem "In Flanders Fields" was read by one of our seventh graders. Then, the Commitment of the Youth was read, in French and English, by two other students. The girls did a lovely job of their readings. Following the last post and reveille was the laying of wreaths. The poppies made by the students and staff at DCS were assembled into a beautiful wreath. Mind you, against the elaborate floral wreaths that were placed by the different countries represented, it was simple...but it was beautiful.
The rest of the day was as they seem to be lately - fast, but not fast enough. I am feeling quite tired - definitely in need of a break. Good thing our Eid break starts on Tuesday. Five whole days of me time - so looking forward to it!
Jessie's visit last week was a great one. Had a fun time taking her to the places in Damascus that I am familiar with - it's one of those places that there is just never enough time. We were able to go do some social things with karaoke at the Bunker Club and the Marine Ball. We also spent some time with Maggie in the handicraft souk and then a walk through the old city on the way to Ninar, a quaint little restaurant, in Bab Sharqi (which I probably spelled incorrectly, but you get the gist)
This weekend is one of rest and relaxation with a little wine tasting (imagine that) and a night out in the old city. Should be enjoyable. I am much more social here than I was in Kuwait - maybe it's what makes it easier to live here, maybe it's why I'm so flippin' tired all the time. Regardless, I continue to love my life here.
Well, I should run home, change my shoes (no more girl shoes for me today) and then head back to school for a bit of the Eid festival at school. A low key sort of event. Will write again soon. Missing you all. Home in about 35 days.
