All's not quiet on the western front

Okay, so I know that I STILL haven't posted pictures, but I have a very busy life.  AND I know it isn't Friday, it's Monday and my blog is late, but as I mentioned, I have a very busy life.  However, look, I'm blogging today.  And today is MaFriday (a Monday that is like a Friday).  You see, there is no school tomorrow.  Then we have WeFriday (a Wednesday that is like a Friday) because there is also no school on Thursday.

Well, in the last week I have had some exciting times.  Last week I saw an orthopaedic surgeon to find out why my foot still hurts some 4 months after my injury.  That was on Tuesday.  Then on Friday, I had an MRI.  It was horribly painful because they made my foot go in directions that my stupid foot should not be going...and had to stay there for an hour.  Today, I saw the orthopaedic surgeon again to find out the results.  The optimist I am, I longed for news that a little injection of some sort of goo and voila, all better and I'd be ready to run in the colour run in either Saskatoon or Regina this summer.  Apparently that is not the plan my ankle (or my surgeon) had in mind.

Way back in January, when I was in Bangkok for a workshop, it would appear that rather than just a little sprain with partial ligament tears that would heal in time, I have an osteorochondral fracture of the lateral talar dome (a broken little bone), complete tears of the ATFL, CFL and posterior tibio-fibular ligaments (yup, that is 3) and sprained my deltoid ligament.  What's more is that the nice little ligaments aren't fusing back together, so sometime between now and the time I come home, I need to have surgery so they can either reconnect or reconstruct new ligaments.  At least that is the word on the street.

So, on the positive side (because as an optimist it is important to look for the silver lining), I'm not crazy and my foot actually does hurt...like, all the time.

Next step will be a second opinion in Singapore (and who knows, maybe there will be an alternative to surgery...a girl can hope, right? - okay, I'm hoping but not holding my breath.)

The end of my school year will not be quite what I expected, but I suppose the good that comes from my foot actually healing will be something to which I can look forward.  It might mean a later return home than I thought (can't fly without being able to sort of hobble to the toilet!  Hong Kong to Vancouver is a 12 hour flight)

So, perhaps now, after I tend to this ailment, I can start to have a healthier year.

On a completely different note, we're in the midst of our last unit at school.  It's a great unit (in my humble opinion) all about conflict and looking for ways in which peaceful resolutions to conflict can impact people.  It's an exciting unit.  We get to study all about the Indonesian Revolution which followed World War II.  And as we prepare to dive into the years that followed WWII and Indonesia's fight for independence, we get to talk about WWII.  We started our first "history" lesson today and it was really fun.  The children are so keen.  They are a really knowledgeable group who eat this sort of stuff up.  We'll finish out the official study this week and then next week, students will prepare for an excursion that will take them to a number of different sites right here in Surabaya that played prominently in the revolution.  So exciting.

And with that, it's 10:45 and I'm likely to turn pumpkin-ish soon.  Even though it's NOT a school night, I should get some sleep.  Perhaps I'll find some other interesting blog stories to share this week during my three-Friday week :)

Sending lots of love your way.

Ty
