Oops, I forgot

I think it was the end of last week when the though came to me that it had been a while since I blogged.  Rather than thinking about it being a while since I blogged, I figured I'd actually blog.

Since I last wrote, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have won 2 games, I've completed 3 weeks of school, I've taken to bun baking on weekends (since I've done it each weekend since I've been here, I feel confident in my use of "taken to bun baking" and am officially "off the gym" for a while.  Where shall we begin.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have come out and shone a little sunshine on a gloomy season.  My uncle would be sure to remind me that Rider wins come along once in a blue moon - but since we had a blue moon not that long ago, I think the Riders are on an upswing.  Therefore, even from Indonesia, I shall wear my Rider green and cheer the team!

Bun baking has been a really rewarding experience.  I am making a single batch - which is totally manageable - even when the power is out, the AC doesn't work and you have to do it all by hand.  I really do have an impressive wife skills resume!  Bun baker extraordinaire.  At any rate, it's an enjoyable past time and I am glad that they are working.  This past weekend as I was setting buns, the thought that occurred to me was "how did I get to the point where my buns actually look like buns?"  It seems like it just sort of happened overnight.  I don't have to play with them - they just roll...just like my momma's!  Sigh!  Look at me go.  Cinnamon buns are a "once in a blue moon" treat.  I brought back 6 KG of brown sugar this time around - and it was a great decision - real brown sugar is hard to come by.  Aside from 1 batch of cookies, I've been slack when it comes to baking for my students.  We'll see what happens over the next little while.

I guess that brings me to the "off the gym" news.  I have something wrong with my foot.  It bothered me this summer and so I took some time off the gym hoping whatever the problem would rectify itself.  Well, now that I've been back to a regular gym routine, I also have considerable pain.  This week I've had an MRI (on Monday) and ultrasound and x-ray on Tuesday and head back for another MRI on Friday.  Hopefully we'll find something out and get some answers.  I will certainly miss my time at the gym and, to be honest, am kind of disappointed that I won't be there for a while, but when I think about it from a rational/health point of view I know it is the right things to do.

Speaking of the right thing to do, after a lot of thought and some glitches in the process to import her, Ella will remain with my momma.  Although I do miss her companionship, I think it is definitely the best decision.  She's been quite a different kitty since we had to put Henry down and I think the consistency with my mom is really a good thing.  Besides, she has trained mom quite well when it comes to her daily routines - playing in the yard at the end of the day; breakfast time in the morning; cuddle time.

I suppose that brings me up to the moment.  It's been a quite but busy start to the school year.  I am really enjoying my kids.  They are a really personable group with neat little personalities.  They are genuine and sincere.  I have really enjoyed getting to spend time with the other Grade 4 class as well.  We've been combining classes as often as we can for our Units of Inquiry.  It has been nice to work with my teaching partner, as well as see how excited the children have been as we explore our Central Idea:  Learning is a fundamental characteristic of humans.  One of the most memorable experiences has been watching the children study cow, goat and chicken brains.  While I don't love all things "gooey" it was really quite cool.

And on that note, I suppose I should be off.  I will try to be more diligent in posts.  Until next time...

ractedco 12Good morning, Ty,
Good on ya re: the bun baking! You might think twice about sticky buns for your students!
We're not quite back into routine here - still summery weather so we carry on with scraping/scouring/priming/painting window trim. Fingers crossed, we'll get the last 5 of the main floor windows done before we leave for ON. I'm determined to hire someone next year to do the upper level! Your Rider-fan Uncle is not yet convinced that's necessary, but I have a few months...
But the best news - how could I forget! - our basement is dry!!! Almost forgot what dry concrete looks like! What to do with all that extra time...
Your grade fours are very lucky little students. Not so much the physical study of brains, but Inquiry - made me want to get back into the classroom. Glad you're enjoying teaming with the other grade four teacher; team-teaching is a talent in itself.
Keep us up to date on the foot troubles, OK?
Love you lots, Lynn
