It really wasn't intentional to not blog for the last month. It's just the reality of life right now. If going to Singapore weekly for therapy wasn't bad enough, I thought (way back when before all this voice crap started) that it would be super wise to take TWO grad classes in MAY at the end of a crazy school year. DUH!
At any rate, the classes are going fine, school is going to finish up in in the next 4 weeks. I have two more trips to Singapore, one weekend in Surabaya and then I'm on a plane heading home. For those of you trying to do the mental math, that means that I arrive home on June 22nd.
Speech therapy is coming along. It is still a lot of work. In fact, I would go so far as to say that it is more work now that I can "talk" more than it was when I first started. Initially, all speech therapy and subsequent exercises required was humming and single consonants starting with /m/. Now, I have not only /m/ but also /n/ and /ng/ In addition to that I have long and short vowels. I even have words, phrases and sentences. THEN, on top of it all, I don't always get to start what I am saying with a /m,n, or ng/ sound so now I have to "lean" into things so provide additional support (it's called adduction - it's kinda cool how it works, but please, as you talk today, try leaning casually so as to press your left hand on a table, wall, etc. every time you talk. It's not the most natural thing.
My students are getting a kick out of my new voice. It's a long deeper than it used to be. And to prevent from cracking, I sometimes (too often) start my sentences with a /m/. They are always quite pleased when I make it to a new "speech skill" They really are a sweet group. I am going to miss them next year.
And I think that is about all the news that I have to report. I hope this very tardy blog finds you well. I must get to work on my university classes now. If I really focus, I could get about 2 hours of work done before my brain turns to mush.
Hugs to all!
Ty
