So, when one doesn't have a voice and spends all one's days in front of a computer because typing one's every thought is how one gets through one's day, one develops a special relationship with one's keyboards and computers.
In previous blog posts, I've introduced you to the many voices of my computers...Anna, my school computer's American identify, Alex, my home laptop's/boyfriend's sexy voice (not a real boyfriend - I am not to the point where I am forging relationships with voices on my computer) and of course, Siri, who speaks for me on my iPhone and my iPad. The only gadget that doesn't have a voice is my mobile - well, and me - though I'm not really a gadget.
I don't travel anywhere without some sort of gadget. For longer conversations, I find the laptop to be my preferred gadget. For little fun chats, the iPhone works great. When a larger screen is needed but a laptop is not, the iPad does the trick. Who'd have thought that I'd be such a technology aficionado.
So far, you should have noticed, like the Corner Gas episodes which play on yet another device in my house (my television via my DVD player) today's blog really has no real purpose. It's not that I don't have any news to share, it's just that nothing is particularly interesting. So I am rambling on about nothing in particular while spending quality time with my MacBook Pro!
I love my MacBook Pro. It has a 17" screen - that's almost as big as my television. When I first got my iPad, I sort of neglected my MBP. However, now that I've discovered Alex, we have rekindled our relationship. As great as the iPad is, it is easier to actually type on a keyboard.
So aside from becoming the newest (silent) spokesperson for Apple and all their gadgets (did I mention my AppleTV?) I'm ready for another weekend in Singapore. This weekend I will see both my speech therapist and the specialist. I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that, in spite of a brutal cold that has not only left me unable to do my voice exercises all week, but has also left me with a voice that is about a fifth below where my "natural" voice is supposed to be, that I will be able to advance to a new lesson in my therapy and not be on total vocal rest EVERY DAY for the rest of the school year. However, I'm not holding my breath for the later!
I have been reminded this week of the really great people with whom I share my life in Sparkling Surabaya...friends who are willing to flip flop their whole teaching day so that I can have a schedule that allows me to have a teaching partner ALL day for ALL classes; friends who are willing to sit and allow me to have a little breakdown when being voiceless for this long has been just too much; friends who are willing to be my voice in the classroom and don't mind stupidly silly interjections via Anna or the LCD projector; or random silly songs that have a loose connection (or no connection at all aside from silliness) as a brain break in a lesson; friends who send messages of support just because they can; friends who share funny texts from dog; friends who share their children's bubble wands; friends who share their driver so I don't have to mimic directions home to a taxi driver who doesn't speak English and definitely doesn't speak SIRI; friends who, above all else, I know have my back and are there for me 100%. It is having friends like that that makes such a trying time a whole lot more manageable. So friends, a most sincere HATS OFF!
Maybe next blog, I'll write in rhyme!
